ROLES OF A VOLUNTEER
Administrative Volunteers provide support to our office staff. These volunteers may work in medical records filing or may be asked to help with mailings or with assembling our agency newsletter.
Medication Run Volunteers are called when prescriptions are ready and waiting at the pharmacy. The medications must be picked up and delivered to our office to be checked and delivered to the patient by a nurse.
Direct Patient Care Volunteers are essential to the volunteer program. They provide respite opportunities for caregivers of patients. They stay with the patient to allow the caregiver to rest or leave home for specific periods of time.
Patient Support Services Volunteers may provide support to patients and their families through friendly visiting, assisting with errands, transporting patient/family to important appointments, helping with light homemaking tasks and maintaining phone contact.
Special Projects Volunteers help with crafts, handmade holiday cards and baking for events like Doctors' Day. They also make gifts for our hospice patients.
Bereavement Volunteers provide support in conjunction with the Grief Counselor to family members suffering the loss of a loved one. Such support may include follow-up visits to the home, outings of mutual interest, correspondence such as notes and telephone calls. They also assist with the annual Memorial Service, Memorial Quilt, breavement workshops and other meetings open to the public.
Fundraising Volunteers are individuals who donates time and energy to the agency's fundraising efforts. They may assist with the operation of the funnel cake stand or help plan other events held throughout the year such as our Annual Craft Show & Flea Market and Celebrity Waiter Dinner. These volunteers also secure donations and post flyers. Fundraising is vital for us to provide assistance to those patients who have no means to pay for their health care. No patient is turned away because they can't afford their care. In 2004, we provided care to patients who could not pay amounting to $60,000.
Volunteer Training
Twelve hours of training is required for the Direct Patient Care, Support Service, and Bereavement Volunteers. Training sessions are held twice a year and cover all topics necessary for these positions from communication skills to terminal illness.
